DNS: point to my site

Hello,

I'm trying to set up DNS for a domain that I registered through alwaysdata. I would like to point it to a server I installed at home.

I know the ip4 address of my server and I can ssh into it from outside of my network, so I know it's working. Now, I read several documents on DNS (I'm not an expert), seems I need to use type A, then use my domain (I used a wildcard), and point it to the IP of my server, is that correct? So in the alwaysdata admin->Domains->DNS Records, I have now a records like this:

A *.mydomain.xyz 22.22.22.22 (where 22.22.22.22 is the ip address of my server)

Now I should be able to ping/connect to it, is that correct? Whatever I tried (running a httpserver, ssh), it seems not to recognize.

If I look for example on https://www.whatsmydns.net, and enter www.mydomain.xyz, then nothing is found. Same if I try some other on-line DNS checking tools.

Thanks for helping me with this rather basic question!

Re: DNS: point to my site

Hello,

In the DNS records section, the hostname must NOT include the domain. So rather than specifying '*.mydomain.xyz', you should just include '*'. For the naked domain itself, leave the hostname field empty.

Re: DNS: point to my site

Dear Cyril. Thank you very much for your reply. I made progress thanks to your help.

Some follow-up questions: I still cannot ssh into the server, so I can do:

ssh my_username@22.22.22.22,
but I cannot do
ssh my_username@mydomain.xyz.

Any idea how I could fix this? Also, do you know what to do if the IP address of the server changes? I saw this https://github.com/Zopieux/alwaysdata-dyn-dns , but it doesn't really have a lot of comments so I'm not exactly sure what this does.

Thanks again!

Re: DNS: point to my site

Hello,

If you want to log using a hostname belonging to your domain, you can create a CNAME record that points to the address specified in the SSH section (ssh-youraccount.alwaysdata.net, where youraccount is the name of your account).
